You always tell me to be myself,
yet you criticize me for standing out.

You always say I’m unique,
but you act as if I’m not special.

You always want to individualize me,
but then you expect me to conform.

Society, you are what’s wrong with the world today.
We all grow up being told by society to believe in ourselves.
Why should we believe in ourselves,
when society will just call us cocky and self-centered?

That is why we start criticizing ourselves.
Oh, but we can’t do that because we have it so well.
When we criticize ourselves, society is there to remind us
of the people who have it worse.
We are told to never change for anyone except ourselves.
Yet when we are ourselves, society tells us we are freaks.
We are too fat, too weird, too ugly.
How can we be ourselves if we aren’t good enough?
Society plays these sick mind games with us.
It tell us one thing, but destroy us for following orders.
We learn how to conform to match every rule.
Now we are considered a “cool kid”.
How does conforming make me cool?
How am I cool by not being myself?
How am I cool by becoming a piece in society’s sick, twisted game?
How am I cool by hating on those who refuse to conform?
Society wants all of us to fit its standards and somehow be unique,
as if conforming is something we can put our own spin on.

Sure, I can have my own clothes but stay “in-style”.
I can have my own makeup and a cute hairstyle.
I can make myself look as fake as a Barbie Doll.

It won’t change what I truly look like.
It won’t change my acne, my scars, or my chipped tooth.
It won’t change my weird birthmark on my left knee.
It won’t change anything society views as ugly or abnormal.
Dear Society, I AM NOT YOUR DOLL!
I AM NOT YOUR TOY!
I AM MY OWN PERSON AND I AM UNIQUE!
Screw you, society and screw conforming.

I will not conform to be like everyone else!
